Made in Singapore — The Secrets of AC Valhalla (Vinland)

PRESSUbisoft Singapore · 2021

A studio feature on Singapore's fingerprints all over Valhalla, profiling three of us: associate game director Antoine Henry, senior procedural artist Zoel Gan, and me, on Vinland.

My section covers how the region was put together. "It's like building a huge playground part by part. There are pools of unique locations with different gameplay," is how I described it: canoe runs fighting river rapids, a trading loop to earn your equipment back, encounters with the Kanien'kehá:ka people, and standalone dangerous places built as self-contained challenges. The goal was "small moments and places that feel out of this world."

My colleagues' secrets are worth the click on their own: Zoel hid a lake shaped like Singapore with the studio's real coordinates embedded in it, and Antoine invented the Isu language spoken by the game's precursor beings, built from Proto-Indo-European roots.
